Hypogeum

|
Probably, the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni in Paola is the most amazing building in Malta. It’s the only fully preserved cult site from the Neolithic period and is over 5000 years old. On a surface area of 500 square metres are three floors machined out from the rock up to 14 metres deep. One finds cavernous halls, chambers and niches, steps and remnants of wall paintings.

Especially interesting in this artificial is the second floor, where string together several sacral rooms. The main hall (lobby) is very carefully designed in the elements of the temple architecture like Trilithon niche, orthostats or ceiling tiles carved in the rock.

A wall painting with ochre coloured tendrils adorn the ceilings and walls of the decorated hall and the acoustics room. In the third floor, range up to 11 metres below the surface, the Seven Steps guides to a chamber system, which is redolent of a storehouse.
