Maltese Food & Drinking

The culinary aspects of Malta are given first by a huge selection. In all resorts are many ethnic restaurant.
The Maltese cuisine has many similarities with the Italian and Greek cuisine, but also with North African, Egyptian and British influences. Special dishes are capers, rabbits and Lampuki.

 Typical dishes

Aljotta - A fish soup with lots of garlic. A traditional summer dish when the fishermen go out at sea.
Bigilla - White beans with butter, salt, pepper, garlic and parsley to a fine paste crushed. Bigilla is a delicious spread.
Bragioli - Beef roulade with a spicy filling of bacon, egg, olives and herbs.
Cartoccio - Whole fish or fillets with garlic, onions, tomatoes, capers, lemon and a dash of white wine.
Fenkata - Rabbit menu. As a starter, spaghetti sauce with rabbit admitted, as a main dish, rabbit in red wine sauce with fine vegetables.
Kapunata - Tomatoes, green peppers, eggplant and garlic, to sizzle as side dish a starter.
Kawlata - Vegetable soup with Maltese smoked sausage.
Lampuki - Malta's most popular fish, only September / October available, with onions, garlic, tomatoes and capers steamed or baked in crust.
Qarnita stuffat (Octopus Stew) - Octopus ragout, with olives, onions, nuts, raisins and peas in a tasty white wine sauce.
Ravjul (Ravioli) - Samosa with a filling of ricotta and parsley.
Ross fil-forn - A rice dish with minced meat, eggs, tomatoes and saffron.
Soppa ta'l-armla - Soup made of white and green vegetables, served with a piece of fresh goat cheese (gbejna), also called widow's soup.
Timpana - Macaroni crowd with a filling of beef, pork liver, ham, eggs, Parmesan and tomatoes.

 Snacks

Hobz biz-Zejt - Literally it means "bread with oil," but actually it is a kind of Mediterranean hamburger: Malta-Crispy bread with is brush with oil, puree of tomatoes, tuna, olives and capers.

 Biscuits and Sweets

Imqaret - In oil fried samosa filled with dark anise dates.
Kannoli - Crispy pasta tubes stuffed with cremy ricotta and candied
Fruit.
Qubbajt - Its like Turkish honey and is certainly a direct Arab heritage. There are many flavor varieties of nuts to Orange.

 Drinking

Kinnie - The national drink of Malta. Kinnie is a bitter sweet lemonade from the Maltese aromatic and bitter oranges and vermouth herbs. Very delicious, popular among children, but not too sweet and also mixes in long drinks.

Farson Bier - The local beer it’s available in several varieties. The Cisk is similar to the German export beer.
Blue Label - dark ale, hop leaf, shandy

Wine - The wines in Malta are strong and develop their own character. Quite stubborn are the Verdala, Blanc de Blanc (white) and the red Marsovin Special Reserve and the Gozo wines. The homemade wine without a label must be asked in restaurants and food stores explicitly.
